Dog Size Guide

The following table provides a guideline of sizes for average dogs of certain breeds. However, alll dogs vary in size – even those of the same breed – so before purchasing a lead, harness or doggy clothing, please measure your dog properly. We also recommend keeping in mind that if your dog's coat is groomed short at the time of measuring, you need to leave extra space for coat re-growth.

How to Measure your Dog

Whether you're buying a lead, harness or some cool doggie fashion, you'll want to make sure you measure your dog first. To properly measure your pooch, use a fabric tape measure and always measure your dog when they are standing.

How to Measure your Dog for Clothing

Make sure your dog is standing upright. Measure the length of the dog's spine, from the base of the neck (where the collar sits), to the base (not tip!) of the tail. This is the cm/inch measurement given in each individual item of clothing's description. Sizing can vary greatly between different pet clothing brands – a medium in one brand doesn't necessarily mean a medium in the other – so make sure to measure your pet.

If your pet is stout or overweight, we recommend going up at least one size to get a better fit. If your pet is long backed, like a dachshund for example, a smaller size is recommended

How to Measure your Dog for a Collar

While your dog is standing - measure snugly around your dog's neck where the collar would sit. Take this measurement and then add from one to two inches; one inch for a small dog and two inches for a large dog. This is the collar size for your dog. Please allow enough space for 2 fingers to fit between the tape and the neck.

How to Measure your Dog for a Harness

First, follow the instructions above to measure the dog’s neck circumference. Next, measure the chest girth of your dog - this is the measurement around the thickest part of the dog’s chest. For a correctly fitted harness, allow enough space for 2 fingers to fit between the harness and the dog’s body. If you're not sure - a size too big is better than a size too small!

Tips for Sizing Collars and Harnesses

  • Don't forget puppies grow quickly, so you'll need to change their collar or harness as they grow
  • Collars, harnesses, and leashes should be replaced when they shows signs of wear and tear
  • For a comfortable fit, a good rule of thumb is to leave enough space for two fingers to fit between the collar or harness and the dog
  • If you don't have a soft tape measure, your can measure your dog with a string and then measure the string with a flat ruler.

How to Measure your Dog for a Muzzle

The most important consideration when selecting a muzzle for your dog is that it fits correctly and remains in place. To make sure your dog has space to pant and drink, allow enough extra space for you to slide your thumb inside the muzzle, around the side of your dog’s nose. When you start using a muzzle for the first time, put it on for short periods of time, eventually building up until your dog is comfortable with how it feels.
